In the midst of fervent discussions surrounding the electric future of automobiles, Audi has given a subtle nod to its legendary five-cylinder petrol powertrain. The head of Audi Sport, Sebastian Grams, recently hinted at the potential for greater power in the turbocharged 5-cylinder engine, without the need for electrification!
This intriguing revelation has ignited excitement, suggesting the development of an upgraded version of the adrenaline-inducing Audi RS3 with even more power!
During an interview commemorating the 40th anniversary of Audi Sport, Grams tantalizingly affirmed the possibility of further enhancing the capabilities of the inline-five powerplant. When probed about the potential for increased potency without the integration of electrification, the esteemed boss simply responded with an emphatic “yes.” While the specific details of these improvements remain shrouded in mystery, Grams was quick to clarify that a complete overhaul of the engines was not deemed necessary. Evidently, the team is seeking to build upon the existing foundation to refine and augment the engine’s performance.
The outgoing iteration of the turbocharged 2,5-litre five-cylinder engine already boasts an astonishing output of 294 kW of power and 500 N.m of torque. This formidable engine, renowned for its spirited performance, not only propels the RS3 but also finds its place in other Audi models, including the TT RS and RS Q3. With the confirmation from the Audi boss that the next RS3 may wield even more power, enthusiasts around the globe eagerly await the unveiling of this automotive marvel.
Audi’s commitment to introducing its final internal combustion engine-powered model in 2026, before transitioning exclusively to electric vehicles, further underscores the significance of the impending RS3. It is highly anticipated that this crowning jewel will be based on the soon-to-be facelifted third-generation A3, serving as a powerful finale for the venerable platform. While the fate of the beloved two-seater TT remains uncertain, as it prepares to bid farewell in 2023, the prospect of new variants appears less likely.
